British crime fics - Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Reginald Hill and Stuart MacBride. All great writers. Stuart's Logan McRae series is dark and funny. I've never laughed and nearly thrown up the next minute so much

Tennis - backhand, backcourt uber-sliced come drop shot - usually spun sideways - Warnie would be proud. And my wicked left foot free kicks. My surgery skills - if only I studied harder at high school

If you could be a fantasy or mythical creature, who or what would you be?

I wouldn’t want to be a chimera like a minotaur or a mermaid. Too many Hercules types and bad guys wanting to do yucky things to them. I think I’d like to be an Elf of the LOTR type.

2. Are you a morning or an evening person?

Morning. I get to work around 0430-0530. I get a lot done at work before the masses come in. And so I flake it in the evening around 2100

3. Is there a day you remember from childhood as being the most fun ever?

My dad was into 8 ball. His club had Christmas parties for all their families. They’d hire a park in the Adelaide Hills. We swam in pool, played cricket, tennis, caught tadpoles and generally had a good time. We’d get soft drinks, ice creams and lollies – something I very rarely got as a kid and to top the day off Father Christmas would come and give us presents. It was brilliant, wonderful carefree days

My dad job worked long hours and this was one of the few times when I remember my dad having a good time.

4. What kind of vehicle do you drive, not make or model particularly, but is it a sedan, or a truck, or a sports utility vehicle?

Toyota Corolla – medium sedan. It’s big enough to put my ball bags in. That’s soccer balls. hehe

5. Do you think in words or pictures?

Words. I can’t draw even in my mind. LOL

Here goes:

If a billionare offered you a million dollars/AUD no strings attached, what would you do with the money?

Here’s a boring answer but the truth. I’d go see a financial planner and secure my family’s financial future. I’d then do the normal things – new house, holiday etc. In my dreams, I’d retire and buy a place in Adelaide’s McLaren Vale and grow banksias and breed whippets.

Do you believe in soul mates, and why?

Yes, I believe in soul mates. I know it sounds corny but when I met Mr Pook, I just knew he was my soul mate - my Imzadi. It’s beyond love – it’s a deep connection. I can’t really explain it. He completes me. He understands me. I can’t imagine a day without him. Sounds awfully like ST. LOL. Does this make sense?

What's the most embarassing thing that you've done?

After I graduated from University, my friends and I got drunk in the Uni bar afterwards. We were still in our academic regalia [gowns, sashes, etc] when we proceeded to go down the main shopping mall in Adelaide singing and dancing at the top of voices [imagine like the end of WWII – singing dancing and kissing strange police officers and men etc]. Unfortunately, my very English and proper grandparents who had come to watch me graduate had still been shopping in town afterwards, saw me, contacted my mum and expressed their displeasure at my behaviour. Ooops. There have been so many it was hard to select the one. But my mum and my grandma never let me forget this one.

If you could travel to any place in the world where would it be, and why?

Central and South America, places like the Yucatan area or Machu Picchu. To see the pyramids and other buildings. It is fascinating to me that supposedly primitive peoples by European standards could build such structures with only simple tools. They had science, calendars and cities as well. What happened to some of them is a mystery.

If you could meet any person in the world (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Leonardo da Vinci. Brilliant artist, scientist, inventor, thinker and left-hander. What would he be able to do today if he had access to today’s technology? The mind boggles. Just to listen to the genius of the man. To ask him how he came up with his ideas - to get inside his mind. I’d be in awe.

1 - I hate being late – my watch is ten minutes fast
2 - I don’t drink hot tea or coffee – I was burnt twice by hot coffee as a toddler – I have 3^rd degree burns to 10% of my body - on my neck, shoulders and chest
3 - I have to put on my left shin pad and my left glove on first when I suit up to play football/soccer

4 – I had my hand on Pat Rafter’s bum at a charity tennis fundraiser ;)
5 – I can’t type fast at all – those people who msn me will attest to this
6 - I feel guilty whenever I buy myself something – don’t we all?
7 – I crave cream buns but I’m learning to resist them now in my old age
8 – I really enjoyed my time in the Army Reserve – especially firing the GPMG 60 machine gun and driving the big Merc. Benz trucks. There’s something thrilling about firing tracer rounds at a target
9 - I was selected as Australian Youth goalkeeper in 1984 – but we didn’t go anywhere. The next year the team went to Dallas and I was too old. Damn!
10 – I could’ve been a podiatrist. When I was offered a place in University, a science degree and a podiatrist degree position came at the same time so with a twist of fate I could’ve been staring at people’s smelly feet instead of cutting up white furry animals for a living
